pickle jar project

there are some things i just can't throw away.
glass jars.... are one of those things.

why?  do you ask.
because first of all i store all sorts of stuff in them.
embroidery floss, buttons, pom pom trim, twinery twine etc...

and secondly...
you can make things with them.

i took these jars and turned them into....

these jars.

and of course it's so simple.
i just spray painted my candlesticks and lids.
(with a grey primer first. helps to cover the writing on the jars)
then used some E6000 glue and glued the jars on top.
fill them up with whatever you'd like.
i found some gumballs and sixlets at party city. love how they are so bright and fun!
then i just added some green shredded paper and some candies to the other jar.
and the fun part is
i can switch them out with the holidays/seasons!!
gotta love it!  :)

Mrs. Mom  – (April 4, 2011 at 6:26 AM)

I love this! I too keep glass jars and use them for like everything. My daughter is having a tea party in Sept. for her birthday and I'm going to fill the jars part way with water and add fresh cut flowers and create a food tray with the glass jars and some retro cookie platters for her party for all of the little finger sandwhiches and cookies. It'll be adorable. Love your candle stick idea, I will have to look for some candle sticks at the 2nd hand stores!

Kristina  – (April 4, 2011 at 6:30 AM)

I have been wanting to do this forever! I've also held on to pickle jars and candle sticks forever to! First coat of paint is going on in about 5 minutes! :) Yay!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea!

I can't throw mine away either! We are building in a collection in our office closet. Whenever anyone sees it, they give me a look...like I'm crazy or something! My big plan is to turn them into lanterns for the yard. We'll see...

Very cute! Candy is W A Y to tempting in my house!

Call Commotion  – (April 4, 2011 at 10:57 AM)

Be careful with pickle jars!! Sometimes you can't get rid of the smell and then your candy will taste like pickles...yuck!!! I used pear jars to make candy jars and they worked amazing! Anything that doesn't have a strong smell works great!

Shauna  – (April 4, 2011 at 11:06 AM)

LOVE THIS! I too am a jar saver for no apparent reason - now I have a reason;) thanks

Lindsay  – (April 4, 2011 at 1:43 PM)

great!
now your gonna have me saving freakin' jars ;)
gotta love ya!!!!

ellie g  – (April 4, 2011 at 11:28 PM)

You are all kinds of....oh my freakin' crap fabulous! I am Wayne's World style "I'm not worthy-in" it over here! I would however, have to hot glue the lids shut. Because I cannot resist candy at 11pm. Regardless if I like it or not.

We MUST meet in real life. So I can show you my praises. It's really entertaining, and sincere. :)

DieselMonkey  – (April 5, 2011 at 5:33 AM)

I'm a jar saver too. Our jam jars have a pretty curved wall. I have been re-filling with nuts and bulk dry goods. I have been meaning to spray the lids so our various brands can match.

The Robinsons  – (April 5, 2011 at 6:27 AM)

Absoultely LOVE this! I save glass jars, but have never thought about using them for anything other than food storage. After seeing how pretty these are, you have opened a world of possibilities for me! Thanks for sharing!

Teri  – (April 5, 2011 at 9:42 AM)

Brilliant!! That really just sums it up, brilliant. I cannot through away glass jars either and this is so perfect.

Maria Ortiz-Cintron –   – (April 5, 2011 at 9:56 AM)

Michelle Life Buy The Beach  – (April 5, 2011 at 10:52 AM)

Now this is something I think I can do! So cute!

Emily Kate  – (April 5, 2011 at 10:53 AM)

I have the same question mentioned by others, how do you get the pickle smell out?

I'll never forget winning a pickle jar full of smarties in an estimation contest in elementary school and getting home to discover my 783 smarties tasted like pickles.

Nyssa Christie  – (April 5, 2011 at 1:55 PM)

Such a fun idea for easter! Pretty display!

Dara  – (April 5, 2011 at 3:00 PM)

WOW!!!! I don't know where it comes from but I'm glad that you all come up with it. This is brilliant and I'll be yard saling this weekend and this will be my project, immediately.
Cheers!

What a great idea! I am always saving jars, just not certain what to do with them and now you gave me such a wonderful idea. :)

Emelie  – (April 6, 2011 at 8:33 AM)

Lots of jar savers out there apparently. You've given us all hope that we're not crazy and can accomplish great things due to our thriftiness!!
I love these, and they almost look like something I could and should tackle. Is there a certain kind of primer that you use that goes on glass? I already have everything else.
Thanks! I'm going to link to you on

I love this!

And I also love your Easter Subway Art. Are you sharing that one? :)

Crickit  – (April 19, 2011 at 6:46 AM)

I have a question about the empty pickle jars. How do you get the smell out of the jar? Did you wash it with something in particular to get rid of the garlic smell?

Thanks!

lupe martinez –   – (April 20, 2011 at 12:01 PM)

i get the smell out of jars by putting baking soda in them, close up the lid and let them sit for a day or so. then i rinse them out. sometimes i put them back into the dishwasher just because.

This Lil Piglet  – (April 24, 2011 at 12:59 AM)

Such a cute project and so easy! I've featured you on my blog at http://www.thislilpiglet.net/2011/04/hoppy-easter.html

Krysta  – (May 2, 2011 at 6:11 AM)

lol. I have to laugh because I actually have a PICKLE jar right next to me that I have reused. This one is holding pens, pencils, scissors, and various other knick-knacks. I love reusing jars and pickle jars in particular. I actually have a few right now whose lids are going to get a coat of chalkboard paint and then I'll put fabric scraps in them. Jars are so much fun. :P

Becky  – (July 17, 2011 at 9:56 PM)

I just linked to your site about my pickle jar creations and how I decorated them for the 4th, and also for the "Oh, Snap" toppers. Thanks for the fun ideas!

How do you get rid of the pickle smell because I can't wait to try this!!!!!

jamie@eighteen25  – (March 14, 2012 at 6:16 PM)

Kristy... i'm sure if you run the jars through the dishwasher a few times, it will get the smell out.

Candice –   – (April 3, 2012 at 6:02 PM)

Found this idea on pinterest. Just made some of them for my son to give his teachers as Easter gifts - glued some pastel ribbon around and filled with jelly beans. So cute! Thanks for sharing such a creative (easy) idea!
